5 Mistakes Keeping You from Getting Lasting Relief from Stubborn Pain

Battling stubborn pain for six months or more? Many people find themselves caught in a cycle of conflicting explanations and advice, endless treatments that don't work, and a constant search for relief. Today, I’m sharing the five biggest mistakes people make when trying to find lasting relief from unrelenting pain and offering practical advice to help you navigate your recovery journey more effectively.

Mistake 1: Relying on Pain Masking Remedies

One of the most common mistakes is relying too much on pain-masking remedies. These treatments cover up the pain without addressing the root cause. While they offer temporary relief, they don’t provide a long-term solution.

Examples of Pain Masking Remedies:

  • Painkillers (e.g., gabapentin)
  • Ice packs
  • TENS units

  • Red light lasers

  • Chiropractic adjustments

  • Massage

  • Ultrasound therapy

  • Injections and ablations

These remedies can drain your hope when they don't work as expected. Over time, you might start feeling like a lost cause, leading to increased fear and anxiety. It's crucial to seek treatments that address the deeper causes of pain, not just mask it temporarily.

Mistake 2: Focusing on Finding ONE Thing Wrong and ONE Solution

Chronic pain is complex and rarely caused by a single factor. It involves physical, mental, emotional, and nervous system components. Focusing on finding one singular cause or solution is often counterproductive.

Understanding Chronic Pain:

  • Physical: Mechanical and structural issues.

  • Mental and Emotional: Mood, emotions, memories, stress.

  • Nervous System: Central and peripheral sensitization.

Pain requires a multifaceted approach. Instead of searching for one magic fix, adopt a combined strategy that addresses all aspects of pain simultaneously. This comprehensive approach is where real breakthroughs happen.

Mistake 3: Constantly Looking for the Next Thing

Desperation can lead to constantly searching for the next treatment to try. This pattern can prevent you from giving any single approach a fair chance, creating doubt and distraction.

Breaking the Cycle:

  • Stick with proven techniques and trust the process.

  • Be consistent with your current plan before moving on to the next option.

  • Recognize and address thought patterns that lead to constant searching.

Techniques that address the deeper causes of pain typically take time and consistency. Avoid the trap of hopping from one treatment to another without allowing sufficient time for results.

Mistake 4: Relying Solely on the Medical System

The medical system plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing pain but relying solely on it can be a mistake. The system often focuses on masking pain or addressing only its physical aspects without empowering you with self-healing strategies.

Empower Yourself:

  • 90% of your health involves your daily actions, such as sleep, diet, behavior, thoughts, and environment.

  • While medical interventions are important, they should be part of a broader, self-empowered approach to health.

Don’t let the medical system paralyze you with dependence. Take control of your health by incorporating daily habits that support your overall well-being.

Mistake 5: Seeking Quick Fixes

We live in a culture of instant gratification, and the pain relief industry caters to this desire. Quick fixes can provide immediate relief, but they rarely offer lasting results.

Patience and Persistence:

  • Understand that lasting pain relief requires effort, consistency, and patience.

  • Avoid the wild goose chase of searching for the next quick fix.

  • Focus on building sustainable habits and following a comprehensive treatment plan.

Remember, you don’t achieve significant results overnight. Just like building muscle at the gym, finding lasting relief from pain takes time and consistent effort.

These five mistakes—relying on pain masking remedies, focusing on finding one thing wrong and one solution, constantly looking for the next thing, relying solely on the medical system, and seeking quick fixes—can derail your progress and prevent you from finding lasting pain relief.

How to Radically Reduce Stubborn Pain

Discover the 4 neurologic adaptations that amplify pain - and the evidence-based techniques that address them.

Hi, I'm Dr. Alissa Wolfe

PT, DPT, OMPT, OCS, CHC, TPS

I'm a board-certified orthopedic doctor of physical therapy, but I specialize in complex and persistent pain.

My focus is on the neurologic wiring between the structures of the body and the mind — the missing piece most treatments overlook.

I've been building pain programs across the US since 2016 — including one for the US Army — because I kept seeing the same gap: smart, motivated people doing everything they were told, and still not getting better.

In 2021 I founded the Chronic Pain Breakup Method to fill the gap the medical system has left wide open.

Now, I work exclusively with people who have complex pain that hasn't responded to standard treatments, providing the structure, guidance, and relief they've been searching for.
